Carlo Pellicani, after Carlo Buzzi, Abraham and Isaac

1807-13
Marble
West façade, Milan Cathedral

As usual, the image pictures the details from Genesis 22:4-8 — the altar, the wood, Isaac trussed, the interceding angel, and Abraham with this sword. Differences: The sword is already broken, God is not directly in evidence, and the altar is a simple construction of unhewn stone (viz. God's instructions in Exodus 20:25) rather than the Christian-style altars seen in many medieval examples.
